Sunshine Coast on 8 November: Cryptic Beauty and Zoureka raced on speed and won on a longer stride

Two of Sunday's Sunshine Coast winners are horses that race up near the front, and Horse Truth's race tracking shows each of them finished on a longer stride, one against the field and one against its own past.

Cryptic Beauty's Horse Truth file says it has been up near the front early in each of its last six runs. On Sunday at the Sunshine Coast it won race six.

The finishing order tells you that much. The race tracking tells you how. In the run home, Cryptic Beauty's stride was noticeably longer than in the middle of the race, and it held its stride late second best of the ten runners.

That is worth a pause. Cryptic Beauty did its work early, and it still finished with a longer step than it carried through the middle of the race.

The sealed pick ran on the other engine

Dark Arts was the sealed Horse Truth pick in that race and ran second. Its file describes a sustained finisher, a horse that ran a top three last 400 metres in five of its last six runs. On Sunday it lifted its stride rate late third best of the ten, with its cadence a little quicker in the run home than in the middle of the race.

So the pick finished the way its profile said it would, by quickening its legs. The leader in front of it lengthened instead. Dark Arts rates on nine runs as a grade specialist with its form holding, a horse that beats its rivals more than the clock. Sunday fits that read. It simply met a speed horse that did not come back.

Cryptic Beauty's own file is the awkward part. Horse Truth reads its form as declining across seven rated runs, and its attention reads decline watch. A win on Sunday sits against that line. One run does not turn a trend, but the late stride measure is the first thing to check when it races next.

Zoureka, measured against itself

Race four produced the same shape from a different angle.

Zoureka has been up near the front early in all four of its rated runs. It won on Sunday, and the tracking compares its stride with its own recent past. After allowing for the going, its stride was noticeably longer than in its last three runs.

That is a different measure from the one that told Cryptic Beauty's story. One compares a horse with the rest of the field inside a single race. The other compares the horse with itself over several races. Zoureka's longer stride came against its own history, and it reads as a grade specialist with its form holding on four rated runs.

Conformity, the sealed pick, ran fourth of six. Its profile is even pace, with no strong early or late pattern across its last six runs, and it lifted its stride rate late third best of the six. Zoureka, the horse whose stride had grown against its own file, beat it.

The horse that held on best

Cuesta held its stride late best of the ten runners, and in the run home its stride was noticeably longer than in the middle of the race. Its profile is even pace across three runs, and Horse Truth reads it as a grade specialist with its form holding. It won.

Golden Loom ran second after lifting its stride rate late third best of the ten.

The sealed pick, Sir Maurice, ran sixth. After allowing for the going, its stride was noticeably shorter than in its last three runs. Its form reads declining across eight rated runs. The tracking records the shorter stride and gives no reason for it, and Horse Truth draws none. What the file shows is a falling form line, and Sunday's stride measure sat with that line rather than against it.

Holding a stride is not always enough

The opening race is the reminder that no single measure settles a result.

Swim Up Bar, the sealed pick, held its stride late best of the six runners, and its stride in the run home was a lot longer than in the middle of the race. On the tracking it finished as well as anything in the field. It ran second to Better Be Done, a horse whose profile is a sustained finisher with a balanced stride type, leaning to neither length nor rate over its last three runs. Both horses rest on one or two rated runs, so treat each read as an early look.

Race seven ran the other way. Shadwell Lane won after holding its stride late second best of the six, even with its stride a little shorter in the run home than in the middle of the race. A shorter stride late can still rank near the top of a field. The measure compares horses with each other, so a horse that gives away little can rate well without lengthening at all.

The honest tally

The sealed picks at the Sunshine Coast finished in the first three in four of the seven races.

Tivacious was the one winner. It took race three after lifting its stride rate late third best of the nine runners, and Horse Truth reads it as a grade specialist on two rated runs. Swim Up Bar, Akira San and Dark Arts all ran second. Conformity ran fourth and Sir Maurice sixth. Galavino, the pick in race seven, has no place in the official result, and the record shows that race as it stands.

What Sunday teaches is worth carrying to the next meeting. A horse that races on speed is easy to file as one that will fade late. The tracking measures whether it does. Cryptic Beauty and Zoureka both raced near the front and both came home on a longer stride, measured against the field in one case and against the horse's own runs in the other.
