Strada Varenna and Sir Goldalot won against the lane at two tracks on the same Saturday

Brisbane and Toowoomba leaned opposite ways on Saturday, and two Horse Truth selections won from the side each track was against.

Strada Varenna won race six in Brisbane on Saturday from the inside half of the track. By the end of the day the wide half had filled more of the placings than it normally does there.

Toowoomba ran the other way. The inside half did the damage, and Sir Goldalot still won the last from the wide half.

The results page gives both horses a 1 and moves on. Horse Truth's tracking says there was more to both wins. Each horse won from the part of the track that was working against it.

What a track pattern is

After every meeting, Horse Truth counts where the placegetters raced. It splits each field into the inside half and the wide half, and the front, middle and rear thirds early. Then it compares that day with a normal day at the same track.

A pattern is only called on a clear shift, and only when enough placegetters have been counted to trust it. Most days there is no call at all. Saturday had one at each meeting, and they pointed in opposite directions.

Any horse that still finishes in the first three from the wrong side gets a short line on its horse page. The line says it ran against the track.

That line matters because a lane bias does quiet work. Horses on the right side look better than they are. Horses on the wrong side look worse. A form guide records the finish and nothing about the lane, so the next time either horse runs, the bias has gone missing from the story.

The two who beat it

Both winners were Horse Truth's sealed selections in their races, sealed before the jump. Neither read knew about the lane. The pattern only exists once the day is over, so the sealed reads had no way to see it. That is the honest point. The model did not foresee a bias. It picked two horses good enough to win anyway.

Strada Varenna's page reads it as a class horse racing below its best, with its form holding. Its best rated run came at 1200 metres. The file is small, five rated runs, so Horse Truth marks it low evidence. In the run home it held its stride third best of the eight runners. Its stride shortened late, as nearly every horse's does, but by less than most of the field.

Sir Goldalot carries the deeper file. Sixteen rated runs, form rising, best rated run at 1800 metres. In the last at Toowoomba it held its stride late better than any of the six runners. Racing wide usually means covering more ground. Doing that on a day that suited the rail, and still holding its stride best of the field, is a strong run.

Next time either horse turns up, the bare form line will show a win. The horse page will show what kind of win it was.

The falling form reads that won anyway

Two other Brisbane winners carry a warning on their pages. Horse Truth reads both Ready For Aimee and Brindavan as class horses with their form falling.

Ready For Aimee won race three. Its race day signal now says its form turned up. Against its field it ran clearly better than in its previous three runs, which had been flat or falling. It held its stride late third best of the eleven runners.

Brindavan won the last, race ten. It held its stride late better than any of the twelve runners. Its running profile is a sustained finisher, with a top three last 400 metres in five of its last six runs. Its file rests on six rated runs.

A form trend is built from a run of races, so it is slow to turn. Saturday shows the lag. Ready For Aimee's single run turned the signal while the longer trend still points down. One run does not make a revival. Its next start will say whether this was the turn or a one-off.

Spoilt Rotten fits the same picture at Toowoomba. Its page also reads falling form, yet it ran second in race three and held its stride late second best of the ten runners.

Where the reads missed

Horse Truth's sealed selections finished in the first three in eight of the seventeen races, and won five. The other nine are on the record beside the hits.

Hell To Pay was the sharpest miss, eighth in race five. Its page reads a class horse with its form holding, best at 1600 metres, and an early speed runner, up near the front early in four of its last six runs. Its stride on Saturday was noticeably longer than in its last three runs, after allowing for the going. A longer stride usually goes with a better run, and the finish did not follow. The tracking does not explain why, and Horse Truth will not guess.

Lead Me On ran fifth in race eight. It held its stride late better than any of the nine runners, yet its race day signal says its form turned down, below its previous three runs against its field. The stride says it was not a tired run. Something else cost it, and the result alone will not say what.

Jimmy The Scat ran fifth in race seven and lifted its stride rate late better than any of the eight runners. Its read rests on only two rated runs, so it is an early look and should be held loosely.

What to take from Saturday

The lane is the part of a race that a result cannot carry forward. A horse that wins with the bias and a horse that wins against it get the same line in the form guide. Horse Truth gives them different pages.

Strada Varenna and Sir Goldalot are the two worth remembering from this weekend. Both won from the wrong side of their tracks, and both held their stride late while doing it.

Every sealed selection from Saturday, hits and misses, is on the public record. The horse pages for Strada Varenna and Sir Goldalot now carry the line that says they ran against the track.
