Doomben on 31 October: Malecon ran about 25 metres extra and still lengthened its stride late
The result at Doomben on Saturday showed where each horse finished, and the race tracking data showed how far some of them had to run to get there.
race-daydoombenground-coveredstride
Malecon finished seventh of nine in race 3 at Doomben on Saturday, beaten 4.88 lengths over 2020 metres. That is the line in the result. The line in the race tracking data is longer. Malecon covered about 25 metres more ground than the runner that saved the most, and in the run home its stride was noticeably longer than it had been in the middle of the race.
A horse that runs that far and finds more stride late is doing something the finishing order cannot show.
The measure nobody prints
Margins are counted in lengths at the finish line. Ground is counted in metres over the whole trip, and it almost never appears next to the result. Horse Truth measures it for every runner from the race tracking files, then compares each horse with the runner in the same race that saved the most ground.
On Saturday's Race Behind the Result page, five Doomben runners carried a ground line of 13 metres or more. Each of them ran a longer race than the horse that saved the most, on the same track and over the same trip.
Malecon ran the longest race
Of the Doomben runners in this story, Malecon gave away the most ground. What it did late is the reason to look again.
It held its stride late second best of the nine runners. Its stride in the run home was noticeably longer than in the middle of the race, which is the opposite of what most horses do at the end of 2020 metres. Against its own recent form, its stride was noticeably longer than in its last three runs, after allowing for the going.
Length of stride is this horse's habit. Its stride type is long strider, among the longest third of its field in each of its last six runs.
Horse Truth reads Malecon as below the grade, with its form holding steady. Its best rated run came at 2020 metres, the trip it ran on Saturday. The read rests on five rated runs, which is low evidence, so one run like this can move it.
Win Star, the sealed pick
Win Star was Horse Truth's sealed pick in race 2, also over 2020 metres. It finished second of four, beaten 2.08 lengths, so the pick finished in the first three.
The tracking data adds a cost the result leaves out. Win Star covered about 24 metres more ground than the runner that saved the most. In a field of four, that is a lot of extra running for one horse. It still held its stride rhythm to the line.
The rest of its page fits a horse that keeps going. Its running profile is sustained finisher, with a top three last 400 metres in five of its last six runs. Its stride type is long strider. Horse Truth reads it as a grade specialist, a horse that beats its rivals more than the clock, with its form building. Its best rated run came at 1600 metres, and the read rests on eight rated runs, medium evidence.
The sealed pick finished in the first three, and the ground line shows it got there the hard way.
Groening, the sealed miss
Groening was the sealed pick in race 5 over 1350 metres and finished fourth of nine, beaten 2.54 lengths. That is a miss on the record, and it stays there.
It also covered about 17 metres more ground than the runner that saved the most. It held its stride rhythm to the line, and its stride was a lot longer than in its last three runs, after allowing for the going.
Groening's running profile is speed all the way, so the extra ground came in a race it usually runs from the front. Horse Truth reads it as a grade specialist with its form holding steady, and its best rated run came at 1350 metres, Saturday's trip. Five rated runs make this a low evidence read.
True Amor placed with ground to spare
True Amor finished third of twelve in race 6 over 1200 metres, beaten 1.57 lengths, after covering about 13 metres more ground than the runner that saved the most.
One of its late measures was the best in the race. It lifted its stride rate late best of the 12 runners, and its stride was a lot longer than in its last three runs, after allowing for the going. Its running profile is early speed, up near the front early in four of its last six runs.
Horse Truth reads True Amor as better than its numbers say, a grade specialist with its form rising. Its best rated run came at 1200 metres. The read rests on six rated runs, so it is still low evidence.
Bluepinot paid the toll too
Bluepinot finished seventh of ten in race 8 over 1615 metres, beaten 4.03 lengths, after covering about 23 metres more ground than the runner that saved the most.
Its file reads differently from the others. Its stride type is balanced, with no strong lean to stride length or stride rate over its last six runs, and its running profile is even pace. Horse Truth reads it as a grade specialist, better than its numbers say, with its form holding steady. Its best rated run came at 1625 metres, close to Saturday's trip, and the read rests on 11 rated runs, medium evidence.
A horse with 11 rated runs and a steady read is one where a single result moves little. A run with 23 metres of extra ground is one to weigh lightly against the rest of the file.
What to take from Saturday
Ground covered leaves the result as it stands and changes how it reads. Two horses beaten by similar margins can have run very different races, and the one that covered 20 metres more may have the better run hidden inside it.
The useful step is to check the late measures beside the ground line. Malecon lengthened late after the most extra ground of this group. True Amor lifted its stride rate late best in its race. Win Star held its rhythm and placed. Those are the lines to look for when these horses next go around.
Each horse page carries its full ground, stride and running profile lines, starting with Malecon and Win Star. Every Doomben card from Saturday is on the Race Behind the Result page, and every sealed pick, the Groening miss included, stays on the public record.
