Cairns gave Horse Truth four strong reads and one top three finish. The record keeps every row.

Four of the five picks Horse Truth sealed at Cairns on 11 October were strong reads and only Colonel Parker ran top three, so here is what that day does and does not say about the record.

At 2.13pm Brisbane time on Sunday 11 October, Horse Truth sealed one pick in each of races four to eight at Cairns. Four of the five were strong reads.

One of the five ran top three.

Colonel Parker won race four, ahead of Devine Force and Cincincity. Then the afternoon went the other way. Willingale ran fourth in race five behind Haphazard. Indefinite, the New Zealand bred runner, was fourth in race six behind Bancory Bay. Nippa's Nightcap, the only pick that day without a strong read, finished tenth in race seven behind Diamond Lucy. Naughty Nurse was twelfth in race eight, won by Vouchers.

Every one of those finishes sits on the public record with its seal code and the time it was sealed.

What a strong read measures

The record spells it out. A strong read is a race where the gap between the top two Horse Truth scores, sealed before the race, sits in the top third of the gaps sealed on earlier race days. A race is only sorted once there are 30 sealed races from earlier days to compare it with.

So a strong read measures separation. It says the model saw one horse standing clear of the next best on its numbers. It makes no promise about where that horse finishes. Cairns put four of those clear reads to the test on Sunday and three of them came up short.

The methodology page says it plainly. A sealed timestamp shows when an assessment was recorded. It does not, by itself, prove the assessment was correct.

One day is a small number

Now look at the day before. On Saturday 10 October, Horse Truth sealed ten picks at Eagle Farm at 8.40am. Four were strong reads. Bat Out Of Hell won race two. Bring Me Kash won race six. Bluepinot ran third in race eight. Diamond Show finished sixth in race nine. Three of those four strong reads ran top three.

Put the two days together and the strong reads went four from eight. Cairns on its own looks like a broken model. Eagle Farm on its own looks like a sharp one. Both views make the same mistake. Four races is far too few to judge anything.

The number that carries weight is the whole count. Across the record, 32 of 74 scored strong reads have finished top three. That is 43.2 per cent. Across all 197 scored picks, 82 have run top three, or 41.6 per cent. Take the strong reads out and the other 123 picks have landed 50 times, a touch under 41 per cent.

That gap is small, and we would rather say so than dress it up. Strong reads have done a little better than the rest so far. Seventy four races is still too few to know how much of that edge will hold. The record will settle it over time, in public.

Why the misses stay up

Every pick is sealed before the race and keeps its seal code. The record states that no pick has changed since it was first published. A pick that runs twelfth stays on the page beside the one that wins.

That matters most on days like Cairns. A form guide can quietly forget a bad Sunday. A sealed record cannot. Naughty Nurse's twelfth went into the same count as Colonel Parker's win, and the 41.6 per cent above already carries both.

The record shows the swings in both directions. At the Sunshine Coast on Friday 9 October, six of eight picks ran top three. At Doomben on Wednesday 16 September, one of seven did. Read either day alone and you learn the wrong lesson.

It keeps the awkward rows too. At Eagle Farm on 10 October, Puff 'n' Harry was the pick in race three and does not appear in the official result. The row stays up, marked exactly that way.

Fair to the horses

None of this is a knock on the Cairns runners or the people around them. Willingale and Indefinite each ran fourth, one spot past the line Horse Truth measures. A fourth counts as a miss on our record. It says nothing worse than that about the horse.

Colonel Parker is worth a second look for another reason. Its free read on Horse Truth, last updated on 14 October, calls it a class horse that beats its rivals consistently, with a best distance of 1400 metres from eight runs analysed. The same read says its form is falling and that it is racing below its best. It still won on Sunday. A model and a horse will disagree some days, which is why the read sits on a page anyone can check beside a result anyone can check.

Judge the record over a season. A single raceday will mislead you whichever way it goes.

Every Cairns and Eagle Farm pick above is on the public record with its seal code and seal time. Colonel Parker's free read is on its horse page, and any other horse can go through Horse Check.
